Danielle Neal, procurement officer for Norwich City Council

▶ Listen to this episode

Danielle Neal (they/them) is a procurement officer for Norwich City Council. They gained a first class honours degree in Environmental Sciences from the University of East Anglia, also known as UEA, studying a course that included a year in industry.

Initially Dani thought their future would be found in accounting and finance, because of their strong background in business studies. But because of their interest in conservation and a desire to do something about climate change, they switched course.

Since graduating in 2018, Dani has been working in local government, dovetailing their environmental and conservation interests with hobbies that include biological recording, crafting and knitting, cinema and occasional travel.

As an East Anglian, Dani attended university open days including at UEA ahead of applying and was drawn to the campus and community, as well as the university's strong reputation for both business courses and environmental studies.

Dani discusses the benefits of joining societies and volunteering and how that helped build connections and experience and boosted wellbeing.

They talk about how Gens Y and Z view working life, how they find optimism through their faith in humans and continued advancements in science and technology.
