Johnathon Miller-McCall, Science communicator, conservationist and nature nerd

▶ Listen to this episode

Johnathon Miller-McCall grew up in South London, seemingly an unpromising location for wildlife observation and a career as a conservationist, science communicator and storyteller.

Yet, Johnathon reveals, there are more than 14,000 species in the city, and it's one of the world's largest urban forests – you just need to know where to look.

Now Johnathan wears three hats, working as a comms and engagement officer for Synchronicity Earth, as a presenter and content executive for Earth Minutes and creating content for his own feeds.

So how does a boy go from keeping his (slightly uncool) interests to himself to finding a post-school course that suits his knowledge and love of nature, especially when there was nobody like him on television? Initially Johnathon opted for a finance degree, but with he parked it in favour of studying something wildlife and animal related.

Naturally shy, Johnathon explains his passion helps him talk about his interests and he's learned along the way by doing things out of his comfort zone – including this podcast and recently interviewing London Mayor Sadiq Khan about cleaning up the Thames.

Follow Johnathon's Insta or Tiktok feed and you'll find him filming the nature that he spots on his travels. He's keen to set an example to under-represented communities and says talented, intelligent people still miss out on jobs in the sector because they don't have the 'right' degree.

Johnathon praises the London Wildlife Trust (LWT) where he found the first community he could immerse himself in. Nature helps him stay resilient and he urges people to take their cue from nature's seasons
